LTE Signaling Traffic: What’s Really Going On?

The last in a series of three Diametriq whitepapers on LTE Diameter Signaling has just been published. In the first whitepaper, we investigated the sources of the explosion of Diameter signaling in 4G LTE and VoLTE networks. In the second whitepaper we developed the methodology for a traffic model that captures the key variables that dictate the degree of growth of Diameter traffic. An analysis of the number of devices, the number of events per device, the number of elements and interfaces involved per event visually demonstrates the explosion in the number of Diameter messages in LTE and VoLTE. This tool allows you to customize the key variables for a personalized traffic model. 

For this third whitepaper Diametriq invited Randall A. Snyder to review the traffic model and investigate scenarios that highlight potential bottlenecks. Randy is the President of Wireless Research Services, LLC and a highly regarded authority in wireless signaling. The author first reviews the methodology of the model and then uses reasonable LTE and VoLTE subscriber forecasts and incorporates the new network elements provided in the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) architecture. The goal is to determine how much signaling traffic is generated, where that traffic goes, which events cause signaling traffic to be generated and draw some conclusions that might assist network developers and architects when launching new LTE networks.
